Lady Bunny comes to Hudson - May 12th

The Lady Bunny will be at Stray Bar on Saturday, May 12th. Be there.

Every weekend, without FAIL, someone will come up to me on Warren Street and ask me,

"Rich, how did you get to be SO FABULOS?"

I smile politely, titter, then answer,

"Well babydoll, it was three things. ACT UP, the Club Kids, and the Lady Bunny."

I came of gay age in downtown New York in the late 80's - early 90's.

The ACT UP queers taught me about politics. People in power like to remain in power. They are not just going to give it up. You have to organize and TAKE it.

The Club Kids taught me about marketing. Happy, Happy, Up, Up. Push the envelope. Give people what they want! If there's no buzz, CREATE one. Make shit up if you have to.

The Lady Bunny taught me about life. If you don't like the party, then just put a wig on and start your own damn party.......and remember, don't take yourself too seriously.

From what I've heard, Bunny's Wigstock story goes something like this:

One late night, EONS AGO, (maybe 1987) when Bunny and her friends were sitting in the bandshell of Thompskins Square Park, after a night at the Pyramid, they decided to put on a drag show.

And they continued, every year on Labor Day -- for years! They called it "Wigstock" - A celebration of peace, love, and wigs!!

Here's some video that I shot when I was 22. Please excuse the shaky camera. I was in the middle of the crowds, and not as pushy as I am today.

To give you a taste of "Wigstock", here is a video clip of Floyd. I have more, including some of the Lady Bunny performing.

I'm saving them until we get closer to the "Bunny Day". I will post them separately.

Floyd is still around. A couple of years ago, I saw him on the Lower East Side in the drag production of "Rosemary's Baby". Floyd had a few lines. He stole the show.

Enjoy the video. I'm glad I can share it with you.

Peace, love, and wigs, Hudson.
